Page 57- test, comment on different components
Know what it takes to upgrade a system,
Personal computer basics
Chapter 2- computer hardware
Page 62- questions
The guts of the computer is the processor
GHz
processing speed refers to the instruction cycle, how quickly can it do each calculation.
GHz 2.6 the speed, of the instruction cycle,
Pentium, from from, I II, III IV , to core , to core duo
as you look at a computer, the thing you are going to notice is the difference in the processing speed.
Celeron is less expensive than pentium, and runs at a slower speed.
Keep in mind, the capatablity of the hardware and software
minimum specifications is always on the box, when you are purchasing a computer.
specifications, software will tell you what it expects from the hardware.
2 GB = amount of ram, RAM also operates at a speed, not all RAM
533 MHz= speed of the processor
Harddrive , RAM, CPU, Video Cards, each has a speed.
less expensive, slower speeds of each component.
RAM= temporary =memory-volatile, “Memory”, what you are working on at the time.
Harddrive= storage and it’s permanent.
SATA= Super ATA
Problems with upgrading older computers.
RPM= revolutions permited, like a turntable,
harddrives are measured by, how much they store, and how fast.
7200 rpm= harddrive speed.
2.66 GHz= speed of the processing unit = CPU
26 B is the RAM
250 GB is the Harddrive
The 3 Key things of a computer=CPU processing, RAM, & harddrive
Look at page, 63=
Page 67, Microprocessors and Memory
page 70- Intell, AMD, etc.
page 71- RAM
have you maxed out on your RAM? If not, add more memory
do all computers use the same kind of ram? No
EEPROM: stores information that stays,
RAM is volatile, memory, buy ram that fits your computer.
Section C – Storage Devices
Page 87- read the chart
Magnetic= how the reading and writing is done on these drives
{Floppy, Hard, Tape}
it can become demagnetized
Tape and Floppy have practically disappeared.
Solid State= Flash Drive
In some computers, it’s flash drive for storage, it had replaced some harddrives in some computers.
spinning harddrives are eventually going to be replaced by flash drive.
solid state storage,
Third type of storage, is Optical= DVD, CD, Internal and External, Harddrives.
First, Magnetic
Second, Optical
as the Flash drive gets larger and cheaper, the DVD and CD will be obsolete.
USB, smaller cheaper and more universal, and more useful
Read the section on CD and DVD, on my own.
difference from cd, and harddrive, harddrive is magnetized driver,
CD, is using a laser, that is why it’s called a optical.
similar physically,
one being read, magnetic, one being read, laser,
all being taken over by flash storage
Understand how all this technology is evolved, where it’s going.
Page 88- Input and output devices
Computer , input, output, processing, storage.
Keep this picture in my head.
the most modern is going to have solid storage= flash drive.
name 3 input devices, = keyboard, mouse, pointer, touch screen
Bluetooth, short range wireless,, page, 267
deal with devices that are close to each other.
bluetooth compatible -mouse, = wireless mouth
printer , bluetooth,
it’s becoming easier, no wires, no plug ins, they just find one another
it’s really going to change the way things work.
The connection coming in and out, is making it more simpler.
Page, 90-91
Do not dump the monitor , it’s filled with toxic chemicals,
you can pay $10 to get rid of it, have it recycled
Recycle my ole monitor.
Finish Chapter 2 on Wednesday, take home Test.
